The Best and Worst times to travel Thanksgiving week

BOSTON — Traveling for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday? Well, buckle up and brace yourself for traffic of pre-pandemic proportions.

According to AAA 53.4 million Americans are predicted to be hitting the roads, rails, and air for the holiday which is an increase of 13% from 2020.

According to AAA, the worst time to travel during Thanksgiving week is between 12 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Wednesday; 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Thursday; 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday; 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday; and 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.

The best time to travel during the holiday week is after 9 p.m. on Wednesday; before 11 a.m. on Thursday and Friday; and before 12 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, all according to AAA 2021 holiday travel report.

Boston drivers will find the worst traffic on 1-93 N, Quincy Market to MA-28, the agency said. Expect peak congestion on Wednesday, November 24, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., when traffic will be 240% over the typical volume.

MassDOT will also have extended HOV lane hours on Tuesday and Wednesday during Thanksgiving week.

MBTA posted their holiday train schedule which will run on a weekend schedule. Ferry services will be canceled on Thanksgiving.
