WAKEFIELD, Mass. — Workers found the church bell from the First Baptist Church in Wakefield Wednesday, more than two months after a seven-alarm fire ripped through the church.
The church, built in 1872, went up in flames back in October, with the remains of the church's structure collapsed into itself to avoid it being a dangerous, standing structure.
Following approval from the town, crews began working Wednesday to remove the debris, and found the church bell, also inscribed with the date "1872," in the basement of the church below the steeple and the belfry.

The top of the steeple had collapsed in on itself during the fire, forcing the bell to fall through the spire, down the stairwell and into the basement, where it sat for months.
The fire captain at the debris removal said he was there the night of the fire, and remembered hearing the sound of something loud and heavy falling through the building's interior.
