Alewife Station garage reopens with normal hours Monday

SOMERVILLE, Mass. — After another weekend closure and more repairs, the Alewife Station parking garage will reopen to commuters Monday morning at 5 a.m. and resume its normal hours of operation.

This will be the third weekend in a row the MBTA garage was closed to commuter parking after a piece of concrete fell from the structure and damaged a car earlier this month.

There are about 2,600 parking spaces in the garage, the MBTA's largest, and the closure was a follow up to assess the repairs that crews have made over the last week.

On August 8, a piece of crumbling concrete fell onto a car that was parked in the garage and the MBTA closed the garage that weekend to make repairs. More are ongoing with a $5.7 million contract for work beginning next month to beams, concrete decks, and the drainage system.

All levels are open Monday morning. According to the MBTA, no further weekend closures are expected.
