3 BHC boats collide in Boston Harbor

BOSTON — Boston Harbor Cruises says an "unexpected control failure" is to blame for a collision in the harbor Saturday morning.

Three boats collided around 10 a.m. when the Regency lost power and drifted into the Rookie and the Aurora.

Some windows broke on the Regency, but no other boats were damaged in the collision.

Engineers determined a malfunction in one of the engines, which is what caused the captain to lose control.

All three boats were property of Boston Harbor Cruises.

The Company sent a statement Saturday afternoon:

This morning, Boston Harbor Cruises' vessel Regency experienced an unexpected control failure while docking at Long Wharf.  Upon initial investigation, BHC Engineers have determined that an air control actuator in one of the vessel's four engines malfunctioned.  This failure prevented the Captain from disengaging forward propulsion on the outboard starboard engine during his approach to Long Wharf.  At this time, we expect this part failure to be the cause of the incident.  There were no injuries reported by passengers or crew aboard the Regency or the vessels with which the Regency made contact.  We sincerely apologize to all those aboard.  BHC will work closely with investigators from the USCG in the coming days to complete the formal investigation.
