200 veterans enjoy a day of fishing

More than 200 veterans spent Wednesday on the water, casting and reeling.

It's the day many have waited months for. Disabled veterans and 100 volunteers headed out on Boston Harbor today for the 62nd annual veterans fishing trip put on by Harvey's Salt Water Fishing Club in Quincy.

The day is usually dedicated to a deceased veteran, but this year the honor went to Bob Noble. Noble is a 92-year-old WWII veteran who still works with several veterans organizations to help others.

"I'm very fortunate to be here...it’s nice to be recognized...this is my home city,” said Noble.

For so many of these vets, this is so much more than just a fishing trip. It's the only day all year some have to get out of the hospital.

"Thankful that they put it on for us...such a unique experience for them. a day to get out on the water, a day like this and fish,” said Jimmy Johnston, a veteran.

So many organizations help make the trip possible, including Quincy Police, the Boston Lobstermen's Association and volunteers from several veterans organizations.

"These men and women served our country. They’re disabled as a result, this is the least we can do. they served us, we can give them one day of service,” said Mike Cheney, Harvey’s Salt Water Fishing Club.

The day keeps many of these veterans going for months, not only the memories, but the bragging rights for catching the biggest fish.
