A child has died after falling out of a window at an apartment building, the Fitchburg Fire Department confirmed.
The department said the call for the incident came in after 4 p.m. after the 2-year-old girl fell out of a window at the Willow Loft Apartments.
The child was taken to Leominster Health Alliance, and a couple of relatives also needed a transport to the hospital due to the stress from the incident.
Cell phone video from a witness showed first responders descending on the apartment building, while police on scene then ran with the girl toward an ambulance.
“I cant even imagine the pain the family is going through," neighbor William Reitzell said. "To lose a child, especially in an accident like this."
Others with children were left stunned after the incident.
"Being a mother, I would not want this to happen to anyone," Colleen Hubert said. "It's very heartbreaking, I pray for the family."
One neighbor echoed similar sentiments, worrying about their kids after a tragedy like this.
"It’s devastating," the neighbor said. "I’ve got a 3-year-old and a 6-month-old, very devastating."
Ron Bunnell, who runs a Corvette restoration business next door, said he was surprised to hear a child could have gotten out of one of the fourth-floor windows.
"Typically not, because there are air conditioning in most of the rooms and you can see the air conditioners out the windows," Bunnell said. "So, I don't typically see windows open over there."

Police are investigating the "unattended death," and investigators are now working to figure out exactly what happened as the district attorney says they cannot give any update yet.
The district attorney is still waiting to release the name of the victim and to make any decision on criminal charges.
The apartment complex's attorney has not provided any comment.
