2 retired Mass. State Police dogs need forever home

The Massachusetts State Police Department is looking for safe, loving forever homes for two retired canines.

State police say that a majority of the dogs will retire and continue living with their trooper handlers, but some become available for adoption.

Klauss and Alex are getting ready to retire and need a new home.

Klauss is a 5-and-a-half-year-old Malinois mix who is dual-trained in patrol and human remains detection.

State Police say Klauss' handler was promoted in rank and had to leave the K-9 unit. The handler already has a retired MSP dog at his home and unfortunately does not have room for a second. Due to Klauss' age, he cannot be issued to another trooper.

Alex is an 8-year-old German Shepherd who is trained in patrol and narcotics detection. Alex's handler is unable to keep him due to a new department dog and another police dog at home.

Mass. State Police won't give the beloved dogs to anyone. There are certain criteria they look for in prospective owners, including interviews and background checks.

If you're interested in adopting Klauss or Alex, you should contact K-9 Unit Commander Lt. Patrick Silva at  Patrick.Silva@pol.state.ma.us to be placed on the availability list and be considered for the vetting process.
