2 Medway, Millis youth cheerleading teams win back-to-back national championships after 2020 hiatus

MEDWAY, Mass. — Two youth cheerleading teams from Medway and Millis won national championships for the second time in three years this past weekend. Those Medway/Millis youth teams won the 12U and 14U divisions of the American Youth Cheer National Championships. The event featured more than 200 squads and was held in Kissimmee. Fla.

“I knew the road to nationals in Fla. to defend the 2019 national titles was a very strong possibility & as the season went on and they honed their skills as a team, it was a no-brainer to me,” said Aileen Green, the Medway/Millis Youth Football & Cheer president.

“The cheer excitement in our towns hasn’t stopped since they came back from the regional competition in CT the Saturday before Thanksgiving. The cheerleaders and their parents fundraised to send all 30 of them, and their coaches, to Fla. We are so thankful to all the businesses and individuals that supported them and in turn, we were able to support many of them as well by signage on two Medway Christmas parade floats and sponsor t-shirts the athletes wore at nationals.”

With the nationals canceled in 2020, both squads were able to defend their titles after the event returned to Florida.

“The heart of these two teams hails from our outstanding Program Cheer Coordinator and Coach Kayla Ober, a long-time Medway resident and former captain of the Medway High School Cheer team,” Green said. “She is passionate and dedicated to the sport and to the cheerleaders. She and our coaches not only have given these athletes cheerleading skills, they have also given them life skills and confidence that when you believe in yourself, do the hard work that needs to be done, anything is possible.”
