Two people were injured, one seriously, after the car they were riding in went airborne and crashed into a tree on Route 113 in Methuen late Monday.
The driver and the passenger were both ejected from the car, which was traveling eastbound on North Lowell Street, when the driver lost control, police said. The car then hit a rock wall and went airborne before hitting a tree in the single-car crash.
Matthew Spanner, 19, and Gabriel Hernandez, 22, were the two victims ejected from the car, according to police.
Police were called to the scene around 10:45 Monday night. One of the victims was trapped underneath the car and had to be freed by first responders before they were airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
According to police, Hernandez was taken to Burlington Hospital and is listed in critical condition while Spanner was taken to a local hospital and is in stable condition.
"One of the occupants appears to have some head injuries and appeared to say there was two people in the car, then there was five and then there was three so the dog is just a precautionary measure to make sure that we don’t have a victim either thrown into the woods or wandering aimlessly,” said Methuen Police Capt. Randy Haggar.
After a search with the K9, police said they do not believe there were any other people in the car.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
