Nearly a dozen people were left homeless after an early morning fire in Dorchester, according to the Boston Fire Department.
Flames damaged two different buildings to start 2019 after a fire broke out around 1:45 a.m. Tuesday morning.
The homeowner lived on the first floor of the building where the fire broke out, with her son in the basement and two other families occupying the other levels of the triple-decker home.
"My mom and my father basically owned that house, and my father passed away when I was in middle school," Derrol Johnson, who was displaced by the fire, said. "This is all we basically have. Hopefully we get through this.”

Fire officials say all three floors of the home were affected, but the fire was put out within an hour and no one was injured.
The Red Cross was on scene, and people who lived in the home were escorted inside to gather some personal belongings.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
