NEWTON, Mass. — According to the Newton Fire Department, a 63-year-old man died after an early morning fire on Oxford Road.

Firefighters responded to the 3-alarm blaze around 4 a.m. on Saturday where heavy flames were reported near the back of the house.

The man’s 92-year-old mother was rescued from the second floor with a ground ladder. Firefighter Chief Bruce Proia said she is in the hospital with unknown conditions. The body of the 63-year-old man was later found in the basement. His name was not immediately released.

Chief Proia said firefighters encountered "hoarding conditions" in the home which made it even more difficult to get inside.

One firefighter was hospitalized with a shoulder injury.

The state fire marshal's office is investigating the fire.
