Driver in fatal Fitchburg hit-and-run turned himself in

FITCHBURG, Mass. — A man who hit and killed a woman in Fitchburg on Thursday night turned himself in to police.

Officials said Scott Proctor was driving a pickup truck on John Fitch Highway around 6:30 p.m. when he hit Mary Murphy, 71, from Fitchburg, who was walking along the highway.

She died a short time later.

Proctor is charged with leaving the scene of an accident.

A gas station clerk working nearby at the time said he rushed outside when he heard the commotion.

"Saw a bunch of cops roll up, saw someone lying in the road," Michael Britt said. "An old lady got hit by a car, seems like the driver left the scene. Scum, absolute scum. I mean, it's another life, you know?"

Police closed all highway lanes for more than three hours Thursday evening.
