'If you don't go out, they win': Local residents react to weekend shootings

BOSTON — After a weekend in which 31 people were killed in two mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio and El Paso, Texas, many people told Boston 25 News that they're not going to let these shootings stop them from going out into the world and living their lives.

But after this weekend, an exit strategy is definitely on people's minds in certain areas.

It’s hard not to think about the two massacres this weekend, especially for those entering big crowds at bars outside Fenway Park during Monday night's game.

"If you don't go out, they win," said Elizabeth Friedl of South Carolina. "I have children and I want them to enjoy the life they have and enjoy the opportunities they have, and that’s the best thing that can happen. Enjoy the moments and the people that are for real."

"I'm not apprehensive, you know I feel like we live in a very safe city," said Brian Hickox. "Certainly there’s crime that arises, but it’s not going to deter me from coming here and enjoying the game."

But others are now thinking of ways to protect themselves in large crowds — like getting a concealed carry license.

"After everything that’s happened, I'd feel way more comfortable having a gun on my person, if I ever do go to an event like this for sure," said Ray Gaffney.

Security experts tell Boston 25 News that you should have a game plan in case an attack happens here in Boston. Know your exits in every bar or arena, and if you can’t outrun a shooter, find a way to hide and protect yourself.

"You always need to be aware of your surroundings and what's going on and where you can exit and who’s around you," Hickox said. "That's just the way our society is changing and gone toward."

Boston 25 News' security expert tells us to not forget that you can always exit a bar or restaurant through the kitchen or back door, especially if a shooter is coming in through the front.
