Yarmouth Police say Officer Gannon's K9, Nero, is recovering

YARMOUTH, Mass. — Yarmouth Police say K-9 Nero is recovering from surgery after being shot at during a fatal police shooting in Yarmouth Thursday.

Nero worked with Police Officer Sean Gannon, who was shot and killed Thursday.

Officer Gannon and Nero were part of a team of officers serving a warrant on a number of firearms violations at a home on Blueberry Lane in Barnstable.

The suspect, 29-year-old Thomas Latanowich of Somerville, was allegedly hiding in the attic when the shooting occurred.

He's accused of fatally shooting Officer Gannon, and shooting Nero. A law enforcement source tells Boston 25 News reporter Ted Daniel the bullet went through Nero's cheek and into his shoulder. The wounds were described as life threatening.

Yarmouth Police say Nero survived emergency surgery and is being treated and taken care of at Cape Cod Veterinary Specialists in Buzzards Bay.

He is getting round-the-clock love, attention and medical care. He is under full law enforcement protection.

Nero first teamed-up with Officer Gannon about a year ago. Gannon and his wife also had two other dogs as pets.
