CHICAGO — An 11-year-old boy identified as one of as many as four suspects in a brazen daytime armed carjacking was arrested Wednesday, Chicago police confirmed.
The Chicago Police Department’s Vehicular Hijacking Task Force took the boy into custody Thursday, more than two months after a neighbor’s doorbell camera captured footage of the boy taking the vehicle at gunpoint from two women on Nov. 19, 2021, WLS-TV reported.
“It actually makes me very sad that kids are around these types of situations and not in school and doing what 11-year-olds usually do,” the victim told the TV station.
According to WGN-TV, the boy, who has not been identified publicly, was charged with felony aggravated vehicular hijacking and misdemeanor criminal trespassing to a vehicle.
Police said the boy was also seen in a different stolen vehicle six days before the armed carjacking in the city’s Mount Greenwood neighborhood.
According to WLS-TV, the doorbell camera footage shows the victim and her adult daughter return home in a red sport utility vehicle. A dark-colored car driving down the street is then seen stopping abruptly, and at least two of the alleged carjackers exited the vehicle before the driver pulled into a nearby alley.
The victim told the TV station that the boy pulled a gun within 20 seconds of approaching the women.
“He didn’t really say anything. He was patting my daughter’s pockets to see what else was in her pockets,” she added.
The thieves stole the vehicle, as well as the women’s purses and phones, WLS-TV reported.
The boy is due in juvenile court on Thursday, WGN-TV reported.
