EVERETT, Mass. — Police in Everett are investigating after someone knocked about half a dozen headstones at the Glenwood Cemetery hours after Memorial Day services. The vandalism was discovered Tuesday morning.

Investigators say all the affected gravestones, which were near Fuller Street, have been put back in place. None were damaged in the incident, but the ground where the headstones were, now has impressions from the heavy stones.

"It saddens me to see the destruction to the graves of our loved ones," said Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria. "We will not allow for this type of destruction and will catch those responsible for this insensitive act."

People whose relatives are buried in Glenwood tell Boston 25 that they find what happened disturbing. Many rushed down to the cemetery to see if their family members’ headstones were vandalized.

"I don't understand what jollies they get out of doing that, it just makes no sense at all to me," said Guy DeFilippo, who has family buried at the cemetery. "So it's pretty disgusting."

Sick to her stomach, Kelly Carron rushed to check on family graves at Glenwood after hearing what happened.

"My heart pounded I was just so upset for myself and whoever's family is here that are traumatized by this," she said.

"Devastating, people are just so disrespectful."

Some cemetery workers suggested the stones were knocked over accidentally by someone mowing but Mayor DeMaria said six stones knocked to the ground is more than a coincidence.

Police are looking at video from cameras located at the cemetery's entrance. They've also increased patrols in the area and are asking anyone with information to give them a call.
