BOSTON — A 20-year-old woman was hit by a car in Jamaica Plain and police are looking for the driver they say left the scene.
Dash cam footage captured the moment a red car smashed through a cyclist in the Centre Street/Arborway Rotary.
The woman was taken to Faulkner Hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life threatening.
Police say the small, red four-door car appears to be a hatchback.
The victim's father said his daughter was on her daily route, riding from her family's home in West Roxbury to an internship in Cambridge.
Less than halfway into the commute, she found herself lying on concrete in a busy rotary, as the driver in the crash kept going.
"Car came from behind and tried to go around her," the father, named Henry, said. " Hit her, and she fell off her bike."
Henry said he was floored by the footage of his daughter flying off her bike into the Jamaica Plain rotary.
Video shows the red car involved in the collision didn't stop for a second, and continued exiting the rotary and the scene.
"It's kind of awful they did leave the scene," Henry said. "More of the sting now that we know she's okay than anything else."
Henry believes the driver had no way of knowing if his daughter was okay, which he says makes the driver's actions unconscionable.
Henry's daughter is out of the hospital and back at her internship, but Henry said he'll do anything he can to keep her off her bicycle in the area for the time being.
“Friends were telling us, 'You’re crazy to let her bike to Cambridge,'" Henry said. "But she wanted to and we thought it was good for her. It won't be going on anymore. It’s just a lesson that things can happen."
Henry believes the backpack and helmet his daughter was wearing protected her from any serious injuries, and was also grateful for the driver with the dash-cam, who caught the scene and stopped to check on the daughter.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or can identify the vehicle are asked to contact Mass. State Police at 617-698-5840.
