ATTLEBORO, Mass. — Two people are dead and three injured in a two-car crash on Interstate 95 southbound in Attleboro early Thursday morning.
State Police said a 2018 Kia Soul traveling at a high rate of speed crashed into the back of a 2007 Hyundai GST with five people inside around 1:25 a.m. Passengers in the Hyundai were trapped in the backseat, including a 23-year-old woman from Los Angeles. She was transported to Sturdy Memorial Hospital, where she later died.
The driver of the Kia, a 28-year-old Providence man, was transported to Rhode Island Hospital and also died from his injuries, state police said in news release.
State Police had initially confirmed only one fatality early Thursday morning.
Police said the Kia was in the right travel lane when the driver lost control and swerved into the middle lane, rear-ending the Hyundai.
Three people in the Hyundai were transported to local hospitals for their injuries; a 23-year-old man from Providence, a 23-year-old man from Berwyn, Illinois, and a 27-year-old man from Daly City, California.
The two-car crash shut down all southbound lanes near exit 3 on I-95 for about three hours but has since reopened.
State Police are investigating the crash.
The names of the victims have not yet been released.
