More than one million people expected at Patriots parade

BOSTON — More than one million fans are expected along the Patriots parade route Tuesday. That means a lot of preparation by city workers for the massive event.

We've been here before, but it never seems to get old. And that's why – along with some decent weather – the mayor and police expect fans to come out in record numbers.

Not such a distant memory: two years ago, the New England Patriots and their fans celebrated five Super Bowl victories. Fans attended in impressive numbers despite the snow and the bitter cold.

But this year, with warmer weather forecasted, city officials say Boston could see a record turnout.

"We’re expecting well over a million, folks," said Boston Police Commissioner William Gross.

And for that, they're prepared.

The mayor's office and the police department announced extra security along the parade route and in surrounding neighborhoods.

"You’ll see uniformed officers, but we’ll have plain clothes as well," Commissioner Gross said.

As city crews put up parade barricades, they’re not the only ones "doing their job" overnight. Boston Duck Tours crews are prepping their parade vehicles for the players and their families.

"The staff here at the garage works tirelessly here to create these platforms that every parade we have, to take out the seats, [and] put in the platforms so that there’s a visibility for the players," said Johnny Kinsman of Boston Duck Tours.

Meanwhile, the city urges fans not to make the same mistake as in October – when, at the Red Sox World Series championship parade, a beer was thrown at Manager Alex Cora.

"Watching the parade there are going to be kids and families,” said Boston Mayor Marty Walsh. "So, we're asking do not throw things, do not throw beers, do not throw anything at those boats. We don’t want to see anyone get hurt."

And with a final plea to act responsibly – also a nod to the team that got everyone here.

"Congratulations to the New England Patriots, the best team on earth," Commissioner Gross said. "Six super bowl rings. Six."

The parade starts at Hynes Convention Center and wraps up at City Hall.

While the city says there is no known security threat, they do urge anyone who sees or hears anything out of the ordinary to immediately call police.
