State Police Airwing finds missing 78-year-old hunter with dementia in dense Western Mass. woods

LEE, Mass. — Troopers rescued a hunter who was lost in the woods in frigid temperatures for hours earlier this month.

State Police say on December 3, a 78-year-old hunter with dementia walked into the woods around 6 a.m. with his brother and planned to meet up before dusk.

At 3 p.m., the brother reported him missing.

Sergeant Tom Foley and Chief TFO Brian LeClair, the crew of Airwing 4, were alerted to the situation around 7 p.m. and responded to the area to assist.

Although the missing hunter did not possess a cell phone, he was able to make contact with rescuers via a radio, according to authorities. However, the hunter was unable to tell exactly where he was.

Using infrared technology, the airwing team located the missing man within minutes.

The team then provided detailed directions to ground crews from the air and guided rescuers over the rugged terrain toward the hunter.

The hunter was located shortly after 8 p.m.

He has been exposed to the elements for 15 hours.
