BOSTON — A series of reported manhole explosions knocked out power to a portion of South Boston Wednesday night.
A gaping hole erupted on Dorchester Avenue before 10:00 p.m. Workers could be seen lingering around the smoking hole several feet wide.
According to the Eversource outage map, 196 customers were without power as of 10:15 p.m. Power is expected to be restored by 11:45 p.m.
“Like a bomb went off,” a South Boston resident told Boston 25. “Came outside, neighbors were here. They had said they called 911 because they saw smoke coming out of the manhole. Then they said a huge burst of flame came out and it exploded.”
Boston 25 is working to learn the cause of the apparent explosion.
