BOSTON — Sam Adams announced it’s closing its taproom and rooftop patio in Boston and will only offer contactless pickup due to an influx of out-of-state visitors from coronavirus hotspots and concerns for the safety of its workers and guests.

The company made the announcement Tuesday in a Facebook post, calling it a tough decision to close its outdoor patio and taproom near Faneuil Hall. “While we love welcoming visitors to the taproom, we also know we need to do our part to keep everyone as safe as possible.”

Sam Adams says it will offer contactless pickup and online ordering for beer and merchandise and for the near future will be open for to-go orders only, Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.

“We’ll continue to monitor trends and will reopen our rooftop patio when we believe it is in the best interest of our drinkers and coworkers,” the company wrote.

This comes as the virus cases are surging in the southern and western U.S. and many states have rolled back reopening plans.

Sam Adams reopened its Boston location just three weeks ago.

Another Boston tradition also announced that it will sunset for the summer season: the Swan Boats at Boston Public Garden.

The Paget family, which has run the iconic Boston tradition since 1877, said on its website that under current coronavirus safety guidelines, it is impossible to offer the rides this summer.

“Our business is a small and intimate environment that brings people together in a memorable way,” the family said. “As a result, we face some unique challenges in our operation that make it difficult to assure the level of safety we are committed to providing.”
