WORCESTER — It’s been a roller-coaster ride for Joanne Songy’s husband, John Songy, a Rutland police officer.
He’s in a Worcester ICU with COVID-19.
“He’s in critical but stable condition,” Joanne told Boston 25 News.
This weekend, John suffered liver and kidney failure. He’s now in a medically-induced coma but is now taking baby steps back to health.
“He has improved, his vital signs are stable now, his blood pressure has improved. His oxygen levels are now 97 percent to 98 percent. But of course, he’s on the ventilator,” his wife said.
John had to go on the ventilator after getting a dose of Remdesivir. A shortage of the drug delayed access, but through a miracle his wife says he received a dose on Saturday.
“Right after the administration of it, his blood pressure dropped. He went into respiratory distress. His pulse dropped and they ended up having to intubate him and put him on a ventilator,” his wife said.
The couple’s story has gained national attention.
"People I don’t even know are reaching out from all over this country," Joanne said.
All are sending their thoughts and prayers, even people from Africa are praying for John, she said.
“I believe that these prayers are starting to work,” she said.
Joanne knows John is not out of the woods yet.
"I have done everything I possibly can and it’s what’s kept me going and I know John would do the same for me," she said.
But right now, she believes the prayers are helping and she’s asking for more.
“Keep the prayers coming because I think they are working,” she said.
