SAUGUS, Mass. — Divers from multiple communities responded to a possible drowning at a pond in the Breakheart Reservation in Saugus.

Dive teams from Stoneham and Lynn assisted in the situation on mutual aid after a reported drowning.

The incident occurred around 5 p.m., and the Essex County District Attorney Jonathan W. Blodgett confirmed around 8:30 p.m. that the victim passed away at 6:24 p.m.

Blodgett says the victim was a 20-year-old man who had attempted to swim to an island in the lake with two of his cousins. Halfway there, he struggled and went underwater.

The cousins tried to find him, but were unsuccessful in their search.

CPR was performed on the victim before they were transported to Melrose-Wakefield Hospital.
