Vermont man charged with illegal gun possession after road rage incident

READING, Mass. — A Vermont man was arrested and charged with illegal firearms possession following a road rage incident.

On Friday, State Police received a call for an erratic driver who had allegedly brandished a weapon while traveling in New Hampshire and headed to Route 93 southbound in Massachusetts.

A State Police trooper located the car in question, a Toyota Tundra, traveling on Route 93 southbound in Wilmington and stopped the vehicle in Reading.

During the stop, the trooper found two eight-round magazines, fully loaded with.45 caliber ammunition, and H&K USP .45 caliber gun with an eight-round, fully loaded magazine in the weapon, a Lewis Machine tool AR-15, 5.56 caliber firearm, along with two empty 30 round magazines, and 314 rounds of 5.56 ammunition inside the vehicle.

The driver, identified as Alan Cournoyer, 39, of Wolcott, Vermont, did not have a license to carry firearms in the state of Massachusetts.

Cournoyer was charged with illegal possession of a firearm, illegal possession of a loaded firearm, illegal possession of a large capacity weapon, illegal possession of large capacity magazines, illegal possession of ammunition and illegal possession of an assault weapon.

Charges related to the incident in New Hampshire are being considered by authorities in the state.

Cournoyer is being held on $5,000 cash bail and is scheduled to be arraigned in Woburn District Court on Monday.
