Two men arrested for allegedly vandalizing cars and leaving scene of crash

WHITMAN, Mass. — Two men were arrested for allegedly vandalizing multiple cars and leaving the scene of a crash, according to Whitman Police.

The two Easton natives, 31-year-old Joseph Shields and 23-year-old Kyle Gaven, were arrested on Saturday morning after police responded to a report of a man being shot with a BB gun while driving.

Officers investigating the incident determined the victim was driving on South Avenue in Whitman when a car pulled up next to them.

Shields then allegedly reached out of the car and shot a BB gun towards the victim while Gaven allegedly drove.

The victim ducked down and began to drive away, and a second shot shattered his rear window.

The man stopped at the fire station to report the incident and was treated at the scene before describing the suspects and their car.

Whitman Police got multiple reports about the incident from Whitman residents in the area, and eventually found the car around Washington Street and Commercial Street.

"It's pretty aggravating, senseless," Chris McMenimon said. "Not exactly what I want to be doing on my Saturday."

Another resident said it was quite the wake-call on Saturday.

"It's not the way I wanted to be woken up at 1:30 in the morning," George Coffey said.

While officers tried to stop the car, Gaven sped away and stopped on Stetson Terrace before he and Shields were arrested.

Officers found a BB gun, ammunition and carbon dioxide cartridges in the car, and found that Gaven appeared to be under the influence of marijuana.

Police then found more vehicles with shattered windows on multiple streets after Gaven and Shields were taken into custody.

The drivers were left with the cleanup, and they're hoping to make more sense of the situation after an arraignment on Monday.

"When I was growing up, people didn't do stuff like this,' Coffey said. "I mean, people didn't do senseless things aimed at people. They didn't know, and now it happens on a regular basis.

Gaven was charged with operating under the influence of drugs, failure to stop for a police officers, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in property damage, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and nine counts of malicious destruction of property under $1,200.
