Police investigating rash of car break-ins across North Shore neighborhoods

Residents across several North Shore neighborhoods are upset after a rash of car break-ins around the area.

Peabody Police posted a message on Facebook warning residents about the recent break-ins, saying there have been 14 reported break-ins in South Peabody since last Thursday.

One city councilor, however, said the number is likely closer to 100, due to many people not reporting the crimes.

Katie Tansey had her car broken into on Batchelder Drive in Peabody after she went to bed on Saturday.

Tansey said she was upset after the incident, but also lucky that only 100 dollars and sunglasses were stolen.

"They could've taken my car, could've taken my debit cards, credit cards, gift card they didn't bother taking," Tansey said. "Just cash and change."

Bill Reilly also had his car broken into on Friday morning on Hillside Avenue, and he was one of many on his street that had his car targeted.

Reilly's neighbor captured a surveillance image of the suspect riding a bike, and police believe it may be the person behind a one-man crime spree.

"Then went to our house, then across the street, so he was zigzagging across the street," Reilly said.

The break-ins aren't just in Peabody, as Lynn Police have also seen a spike in vehicle break-ins.

Late on Sunday night, they had six break-ins, with most occurring on Wentworth Place.

"Definitely in summertime, more people walking around, taking advantage of opportunities," Lynn Police Lieutenant Michael Kmiec said.

Police say they don't think the crime sprees in the two cities are connected, but say to use common sense and lock your car, no matter what neighborhood you're in.
