Mass. State Police K-9 tracks down stolen car suspect in Walpole

WALPOLE, Mass. — A Massachusetts State Police K-9 helped to track down a suspect after multiple cars were stolen in Walpole over the span of a few days.

Walpole Police asked for help from a State Police K-9 as they tried to find the suspected thief after three cars were stolen, with one found abandoned behind a building on Main Street.

The K-9, named Dakota, along with a State Police sergeant, responded around 5 p.m. to the recovered car, which had been stolen about 14 hours earlier, and Dakota began to follow the suspect's trail.

Dakota went toward Main Street to an apartment complex, and ended up tracking all the way through a parking lot to a man sitting in a chair and smoking against the building.

The man, identified as 27-year-old Dorchester native Nicholas Deberry, was questioned by police, as Dakota resisted any officer's attempts to try and move the dog away from the suspect.

An officer saw a lump under Deberry's shirt, and ordered the man to lift his shirt before a large curved knife was found hanging from a lanyard.

Police grabbed the weapon, and also found a bundle of suboxone in Deberry's sock, along with a pack of syringes in his pocket and another bottle of Suboxone with his name on it from inside the stolen car.

Deberry was then placed into custody by Walpole Police.
