HINGHAM, Mass. — The Hingham Police Department is investigating after a person was injured following a road rage incident that led to shots being fired.
The incident occurred just before 4:30 PM on 66 Leavitt Street near the Hingham Public Library, after reports of shots fired.
An initial investigation determined that a passenger in one of the two vehicles involved in the road rage incident fired their weapon in the parking lot of the library.
Hingham police say that the person injured was the one who fired their weapon. They suffered a non-life-threatening, non-gunshot-related injury.
“There was no indication there was any threat to the public safety, because the one firearm was recovered there at the scene,” Hingham Police Lt. Steven Dearth said, adding that the shooter does have a license to carry.
Peter Godwin, who was at his mother’s nearby home, was alerted to the commotion by his dog, as officers searched for evidence.
“I looked down to the crime scene down here, and it was quite a sight,” Godwin said. “They were looking for bullet holes in the house and in my truck.”
Dearth said police are reviewing video and following up on leads, confident they will be able to locate the other driver.
Meanwhile, neighbors and passersby are shocked and upset.
“It’s disturbing, because there’s a lot of children that go in and out of that library,” Godwin said. “And innocent people that all they want to do is check out a book, and there’s bullets flying in the parking lot.”
At this time, the driver of the other vehicle has not yet been located. Police are investigating the incident.
