2 seriously injured in fire at Reading apartment complex; 15 people displaced

READING, Mass. — At least two people were rescued and transported to the hospital after a large fire at an apartment complex in Reading early Monday.

Firefighters found flames showing from the third floor of a 12-unit apartment building at 1 High St. around 3:29 a.m. after receiving multiple 911 calls, according to a Reading Fire Department statement.

Crews began evacuating units and found two people on the third floor with serious injuries. Fire Chief Gregory Burns said first responders performed CPR on both people before they were transported to Lahey Hospital & Medical Center and later to Boston hospitals in serious condition.

No one else was injured, fire officials said.

Around 15 people have been displaced and are getting help from the American Red Cross, Salvation Army and the building’s owner with temporary housing, the statement said.

The State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
