BPD follow trail of break-in suspect up fire escape, find him sleeping

BOSTON — A suspect who allegedly smashed windows of an apartment in downtown Boston while climbing the fire escape was arrested early Sunday.

Boston Police say the suspect, 20-year-old Kevin Dean, of Bolton, Conn., kicked through a window of an apartment on Fleet Street, then another on the fifth floor.

Officers checked the first apartment around 3 a.m after multiple 911 calls but didn't locate him. They heard glass breaking, followed the sound to the back of the building and climbed a fire escape to the window of a fifth-floor apartment. Police entered the apartment and while clearing it, found the suspect asleep in bed, according to a news release.

Police say the suspect said he lived at the apartment but couldn't provide proof of residence, and would not answer police when they asked if he was staying with a friend.

Dean will be arraigned at Boston Municipal Court on charges of breaking and entering at night, malicious destruction of property and disturbing the peace, according to police.
