Swampscott man arrested for allegedly raping five women at gunpoint

Boston Police detectives arrested a 52-year-old Swampscott man for allegedly raping five women at gunpoint.

Joseph Losano was arrested on Thursday for 12 counts of aggravated rape, six counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and single counts of rape and aggravated kidnapping.

Losano allegedly picked up his victims pretending to be looking for sex for a fee, but would then pull a gun on them and force them into sexual acts against their will.

In Losano's arraigned, cash bail was set at $175,000, and Clerk Michelle Fentress also ordered Losano to surrender his passport and any firearms he may own.

Losano was also told to stay away from any of the victims and stay out of Boston, and that he would stay in his home with GPS monitoring if he posted the bail.

The suspect was previously charged in Roxbury Municipal Court for two sexual assaults on women working as prostitutes around Massachusetts Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard last year.

Losano had previously been held on $50,000 cash bail on May 16, and posted the amount.

Five victims have come forward during a Boston Police investigation, according to Assistant District Attorney Ian Polumbaum.

“These allegations are chilling,” Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said. “They suggest a pattern of assaults on women who might be afraid or reluctant to disclose sexual violence to law enforcement. But no matter who you are, we’re here to help you. Any survivor of sexual assault will find a safe, respectful, and victim-centered environment in our office.”
